I think that we need to do a better job of diversifying many different aspects of our performances. Organizations and classical music as a field are becoming much more attuned to figuring out how we can actually help with these issues and become more representative of our society at large. When you’re in the pit orchestra, at times your job is to move with the singers, to accompany, listen and be sensitive.

This masterclass will be followed by a brief recital by Mr. McGill at 5PM. Then to be a part of it, and to go down in history as being a part of it, is something that made the moment and made the opportunity that much greater and that much more unbelievable. It doesn’t just stand for one tiny little part, it stands for all of the different parts in a melting pot. Anthony McGill's resume is as diverse as it is impressive.

We play some solos in the orchestra, but if you play for 20 or 30 minutes in front of the orchestra it’s very different, there’s much more of a spotlight on you. It’s a very New York concerto.

Is the back office diverse? The Anthony McGill was named principal clarinet of the New York Philharmonic in 2014, having previously served as principal clarinet of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and associate principal of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.

Currently more than 800 artists from 40 states and 41 countries are enrolled at Juilliard, where they appear in more than 700 annual performances in the school’s five theaters; at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully and David Geffen halls and at Carnegie Hall; as well as other venues around New York City, the country, and the world.

The program seeks students from diverse backgrounds underrepresented in the classical music field.

Topics: Being from Chicago, being a black American, I had so many different historical and social and personal feelings about this particular moment. McGill will maintain his position on the college clarinet faculty and continue his artistic career as principal clarinet of the New York Philharmonic, as a soloist and as a chamber musician, in addition to his ongoing teaching within MAP.Juilliard’s MAP program serves students from ages 8 to 17 from New York City’s five boroughs and the tristate area. Having said that, one of the biggest differences is actually that orchestral concerts are so much shorter than an opera performance –  it’s kind of like a sprint versus a marathon. “Juilliard is incredibly fortunate to have him take on this new and expanded role, and I look forward to partnering with Anthony and Rebecca Reuter, MAP’s administrative director, to build on the great work of the program.”The cornerstones of Juilliard Preparatory Education Division are two Saturday music programs. “Having access to excellent music training early in my life played a critical role in where I am today, and I look forward to teaching and mentoring the next generation of musicians.” McGill, who grew up on the South Side of Chicago, received his early musical training from the Merit School of Music in Chicago and is a graduate of Curtis Institute.“As we work to build on the extraordinary history of the preparatory division, it is thrilling to welcome Anthony in this new expanded role,” said Juilliard President Damian Woetzel.

That’s something that everyone is confronting right now. He was the 2015-16 WQXR artist in residence and received the John Jay Justice Award in 2016. It used to be that orchestras would do outreach work in certain communities, but I think we also have to look at what our repertoire choices are. Especially with the Copland, they’re just such a great orchestra that it does make you feel like you’re all doing this thing that’s really special together.I’ve basically been playing the piece since I was a child!

So I’ve had a long relationship with the piece. All great composers are able to use the clarinet in their own way, and this piece is extremely effective – the first opening section is quite lyrical, stunning and expressive, and then when it gets to the jazzy cadenza it’s very American I suppose. From Principal Clarinet at the Metropolitan Opera, to his current position in the same spot with the New York Philharmonic, to performing at the inauguration of Barack Obama – not to mention his busy schedule as a soloist and chamber musician.

Sponsored by the Donna Weng Friedman ’80 Master Class Series. It’s hard to put into words. So when I say that the music reminds me of New York, it is not just from one culture, it’s from the possibility that all of the cultures that can come and live in this free country where ideally everyone is accepted.

On stage with the Philharmonic, most of the time the orchestral part isn’t accompaniment, but the main focus of attention, so there’s a different approach. “He is a gifted musician, esteemed educator, and thought leader in the music world, and we look forward to having him as MAP’s artistic director.”“Anthony’s impeccable artistry and deep commitment to the mission of MAP are a uniquely valuable combination,” said Weston Sprott, preparatory division dean.
